Le rendez-vous était fixé pour sept heures, le but de la rencontre étant de partir à la recherche d’un malheureux qui avait choisi d’ignorer le dicton : « Jamais seul, rarement deux ». Une poignée d’hommes refusait de participer en apprenant que la récompense souhaitée était inexistante. Notre volonté demeurait inébranlable. On n’allait tout de même pas permettre aux poules mouillées d’avoir trop d’influence. Malgré tout, on est parti le lendemain, chacun d’entre nous
ayant plus ou moins d’espoir de le retrouver vivant. Il était disparu depuis presque trois semaines. Après deux jours, j’étais seul à ne pas vouloir lâcher. J’ai pu convaincre un de mes bons chums de venir faire un dernier petit tour. Comme par hasard, on l’a trouvé quelques heures plus tard au fond d’une mine. Le corps était déjà rendu méconnaissable. Mais le plus surprenant, c’est qu’il était entouré de plusieurs types de diamants.

The meeting had been scheduled for seven, we were
supposed to go out looking for some poor fool who’d chosen to ignore the old saying, “Never go it alone, and rarely in a pair.” A handful of men refused to take part when they heard that the reward they’d been hoping for didn’t exist. Our will remained strong. It’s not like we were going to let a few cowards call the shots. Despite all that, we left the next day, each of us feeling more or less hopeful that we’d end up finding him alive. He’d been missing for almost three weeks. After two days, I was the only one who didn’t want to give up. I was able to convince one of my good buds to come out one last time. As if by accident, we found him a few hours later at
the bottom of a mine. The body was already barely
recognizable. But most surprisingly, it was surrounded by several types of diamonds.
